James Critchlow 1870 -1943

Mine worker / quarry man, then general dealer, then fruiterer

james-fanny

James Critclow & his wife, Fanny Wilson/Critchlow, seated right- the other 2 ladies could possibly be two of their daughters, I doubt one of them being Mary ( Freds wife). The other lady seated would seem to be be about the same age as Fanny, ie born ~ 1875

No useful Ancestry Family trees seemingly in 2016. But now, 2019, there is a Cresswell Brown tree, owner Frank Bell, married to a cousin, Linda, of Carol's, the daughter of Edwin Critchlow 1927 . He has James born to a James in Console~1865- this surely wrong: all 3 of father & place & year : but Console actually only ~ 8 k NW of Cheadle

James Critchlow was born 28/1/1870 Cheadle, Staffs, to John Critchlow, brickmaker, mother yet unknown.- dofb from 1939 reg & 1892, 1895 Army records. No record of his birth on Bmd- could he have been born as James X, X being his mother's name??

Quarryman, then Miner in Staffordshire until ~1900 when he moved north to Northumberland . Eventually became a fruiterer

No marriages of a John Critchlow in Cheadle 1855-1870

The only births I can find registered are: James H Critchlow born Stoke T Sep 1868, baptism on FMP to James & Emma, or James Critchlow born Dudley Sep 1868 , baptism on FMP to John & Sarah, then appears in Tipton in the censuses OR James H Critchlow born Leek Dec 1871. Felt likely one of the 1868 births, as he marries in 1887 . Also a James Critchlow baptised 24/7/1870, stated birth 7/6/1870, in Manchester cathedral to Charlotte Critchlow- so , as far as I can determine, there was just no registration for this our James!

BUT

1870. James Critchlow was born 28/1/1870 - this from 1939 Register - Cheadle. Parents ?? Could he have been born with a different surname?? And his mother became a Critchlow when he was very young?? But, if so, he should be in 1881C as James Critchlow . & only 2 possibilities there are the 2 1868 lads above! Cannot see any way he would start being a James Critchlow ages 11+.

A John Critchlow marries Sarah Green / Lydia Wheldon Cheadle Dec 1874

Have checked on all the 8 James X registered born Cheadle Mar 1870: Boughey, Brunt, Cope, Fowell , Heath, Redfearn & Smart, and James Wilson Cornes : none of these seem obvious . But a John Critchlow does marry a Caroline Heath Leek Jun 1878

Thought there was always the possibility that his year of birth was incorrect- actual date, 28/1 though is unlikely to be wrong, unless he never knew it! - on the 1939 register and he could be the 1868 registration . But NO, as 1892 Militia Record gives 1870 as his year of birth

1871C. Have searched extensively -again, twice, in May2019- for him and for his father John -Nothing fits

1881C. Have searched extensively -again, twice in May2019- for him and for his father John -Nothing fits

1881, Stoke Schools Admission Book, James, b.17/5/1869, mother Harriett. Felt this was a possibility, but dofb still wrong. Harriett & James Critchlow still have Josiah J Critchlow 1869 with them in 1891C! So this not him, & Josiah J or James Josiah was born Hanley!!

1887. James Critchlow, ~17, marries Jane Sherratt Cheadle Dec 1887. Neither this (nor his 1893) marriage is on FMP, Ancestry or FS in detail- purchased his 1893 m.c (then found it on FMP mistranscribed!!) .- see further on down- to see who his father was- stated to be JOHN Critchlow, brickmaker . Maybe this 1887 m.c. would give a clue as to who James Critchlow was?? - have searched again May 2019 , but not online anywhere!

1888. Gertrude Critchlow born to James & Jane Cheadle Sep 1888 Baptised Hollington, Staffs, on 23/9/1889-FS

1890. His wife, Jane Critchlow, aged 20, dies Cheadle Jun 1890

Gertrude Chritchlow Granddaughter - Female 2 1889 - Hollington, Staffordshire, England

James Webley had married Charlotte Sherratt in 1870 & Gertrude's mother was Jane Sherratt , obviously a daughter of Charlotte. So these 'grandparents' do not help me get back to James Critchlow's parents

1892. Militia Record -FMP .For a James Critchlow, collier, born Cheadle, aged 22 yrs 4 mths on 22/5/1892! - indicating a January 1870 birth -, residing Lightwood, Cheadle, fits nicely. He was working for a Mr Plant, Fenton, Staffs. & is in the Militia until 1895, with the 1895 record showing his wife, Frances Fanny, and the fact that he has 2 children by then .His number 2684. Now know our James was indeed born on 28/1/1870 from the 1939 Register . So, this definitely him- but unfortunately does not have a next of kin on this 1892 record. Does state he is Single [ though actually widowed] and is signing up for 6 years.

1893. James Critchlow, 23, widower, quarryman, marries Frances Fanny Wilson on 5/9/1893 in Cheadle Parish Church . His father was stated to be John Critchlow, brickmaker, hers William Wilson, labourer. Both were living Ashbourn Road . Witnesses were Joseph Powell & Emma Johnson- neither seemingly related . Having purchased this, then found it actually obtainable on FMP as James Crischlow!!

however the entries for job descriptions coal loaders in the same census have been changed to Hewers, whereas a coal loader (filler) shovelled the coal into tubs and a hewer was the man who hacked the coal of the coalface with a pick ,two completely different jobs .

2)Holly Bank Colliery reconstruction 1920, off Bursnip Road Essington , Staffs
3) Holly Bank Colliery 1897 Essington.( formerly Essington Wood Colliery,)
Holly Bank Colliery Co' Ltd.,was formed in 1891, taking over from the Essington Wood Colliery situated behind the Mitre Inn on Bursnip Road Essington.
From James employment description in the 1901 census, he would have worked on the surface of the mine on the Heapstead, cleaning the build up of coal dust and spillage from the coal trams after leaving the shaft cage before  being discharged by the Tippler onto waiting coal trucks ready to transported by a tramway to coal barges on the Essington Canal network.
This work was usually done by boys or miners that had been invalidated out of the mine, however the Cannock area of the Staffordshire Coalfield was notorious for hiring seasonal short term labour from the Agricultural Community to do this type of Work and was poorly paid!
I'm not surprised he didn't stay here long.
