Audrey Critchlow 1929
Needs to write down or dictate memories of all her 4 grandparents and her parents - was asked in 2016, now 2019!!
1929. Audrey Critchlow was born in May Morpeth Jun 1929 to Edwin Critchlow & May Brown . 4 Siblings were: Joyce Edwin Critchlow 1927, Ronald Critchlow 1931, Margaret J Critchlow 1934, all born Morpeth plus Michael 1946 . 2 of these still alive( Margaret & Michael) on 4/5/2019 when Audrey celebrated her 90th birthday up near Morpeth
She was the only one of the 5 siblings to pass the 11+. At the age of ~16 she replied to an advert from Stowe school for cleaning staff and got the job.
"I believe Audrey did interview for Domestic post, her Aunt Gladys was working at Stowe at the time as a Domestic and got her the interview, however if my memory serves me, when she interviewed and saw her school report , I believe she was offered a post in Admin, which later saw her in good stead for admin and Secretarial work in the paint factory in Buckingham."
Down in Stowe, with 7 other girls( who kept up with each other in later life) , some at least from up north, but none from Ashington, she was attracted to the shy, apprentice carpenter, George Dormer, and eventually won him over. His mother was opposed to the match: she spoilt her son and did not want him to marry anyone.

1949. Audrey Critchlow married Alexander George Dormer on 9/4/1949 in Ashington -NorthC Jun 1949 ,
.
Her younger sister. Margaret, was one of her 5 bridesmaids
I know that Audrey had white lilies in her wedding bouquet because her maternal grandmother had just died. Her father's mother I believe had already died some time before, so it must have been Margaret Jane Brown/Gair. Audrey and George married Apr-June 1949 and a Margaret Jane Brown died Apr-Jun 1949 in Northumberland Central Registration District, 1B 272. William Brown then went to live with his eldest daughter, Aunty Ada and by all accounts was a difficult man, a strict disciplinarian. I believe he died in the 1950s. Aunty Ada's daughter-in-law, Doris Younger, might remember when as she had a hand in looking after him at one time.
1949. Carol A Dormer was born N.Bucks Dec 1949. Their only child
.
Audrey & George started their married lives living with his parents, but were then offered a tiny 2 bedroom bungalow behind the stables, where they stayed until Carol was about 5. They then got a council house - in Dadford- opposite his parents. Both Audrey & George worked, and Carol would go to her Nan's after school, then to her own house, light a fire and start preparing the meal before her parents got home

Not sure where the information below should go! 15/7/2016: it was interesting to learn you had found a "Frederick ", although I never knew my uncle by that name. -- he was always Uncle Fred, my fathers brother . uncle Fred was always considered (certainly by my Mum) to be the "posh" one in the family and he certainly gave that impression. I know very little of him, only that his wife was Auntie Mary who was a Nursing Sister, they had two children, Charles who I believe was something to do with the police force and Gay/Gale who until a few years ago had a very popular coffee shop in Morpeth, is now of course retired . they lived in a small village by the name of Pegswood (Northumberland). auntie Mary lived into her 90,s & died only a few years ago, I have no memory of uncle Fred,s death. reference to Francis -I'm thinking this could slot in somewhere with my grannie on my Dad,s side, again I can only remember him calling her "Fanny" & Francis in his better moods. I do remember my granddad having a thriving fruit & veg business, albeit it was selling from a horse & cart !!! I doubt whether Ann would have much on the Critchlow side as she would be going for the Browns - I could ring her . Unfortunately Chris as you will appreciate the family numbers are getting more scarce making it difficult to get answers. however I will look forward with great interest in reading whatever you discover, please ask if you feel I can help- have done!
