Paul O'Gorman 1949
1949. Paul Desmond Hynes O'Gorman born to Patrick David O'Gorman, & Catherine Maire Corine Hynes in Jersey
.
1949-1957 In Jersey, I attended a kindergarten school, called Mrs Benson's (it was in her house from what I can remember). I then went to Victoria College Prep. When my parents and Jane left for Gibraltar in 1957, I had a term or 2 staying with my form teacher, Miss Aubrey, I think, at Bouley Bay. I then joined my parents in Gibraltar.

1957-1959. We moved to Gibraltar where my father was a Radio Officer on secondment from BEA to Gibraltar Airways. They flew either to Tangiers or Madrid daily. I attended the Irish Christian Brother school there and Jane the Convent School. We had less than 2 years in Gib, when my father was transferred to Heathrow where we lived in Heston, Middx. Jane and I both went to St Anselms Catholic Primary in Southall. At 11 I went to Gunnersbury Catholic Grammar in Chiswick and Jane to Gumley Convent.
When my father was made redundant by BEA he took over the Green Man pub at Little Brickhill in 1965. It was decided that a pub was not a suitable environment for 2 teenagers, so Jane stayed in London at Gumley House Convent School, albeit as a boarder and I started boarding in the fifth form at The Royal Latin School in Buckingham. I stayed at the school through 6th form leaving in 1967. While I waited for my application and interviews for the RAF to be completed I worked initially as a van driver and then as a hod carrier on a building site, on ‘the lump’ as unaccountable work was known.
I applied to join the RAF as a pilot but was not accepted, instead offered a commission as a navigator on a contract to the age of 38. Knowing nothing about navigating, this contract was too long so instead I took a 5-year short service commission as a fighter controller, commissioned in February 1969. An 18 month tour in the north east of Scotland at RAF Buchan followed by a year in Bahrein and then RAF Wattisham in Suffolk, convinced me that I needed a flying career so in 1972 I started navigator training at RAF Finningley in South Yorkshire.

On the award of the navigator brevet, around 1973? I was posted to RAF Scampton near Lincoln as a navigator radar on Vulcans. My first squadron was 617 Sqn. I then became an instructor on the Vulcan, followed by a staff tour at HQ1 Group at RAF Bawtry near Doncaster. On the demise of the Vulcan, I was posted to RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire in 1983 as a navigator on the C130 Hercules.
