1894. He joins the Royal Garrison Artillery in Limerick - apparent age 14 yrs 4 mths , 2/11/1894 ! Just 4ft 10 in & 62 lb. Regl number 4638
A British Army WW1 Pension Record 1914-1920 exists for him, 18 pages of it . Grew to 5 ft 7ins high.
When he joined in Limerick, on 2/11/1894, he was 4 ft 11 ins, blue eyes, light brown hair, and professed to be C of E . Reg. number 6438. He was a Trumpeteer by 1895: a Gunner Cpl by 1898; a Sergeant by 1906 and a Company QM Sgt by 1910 .Married Ellen Mabel Trevethan 4/3/1903 in Maker . He was in the UK in Sep 1909, then in Malta, Tigne, from 14/9/09 until 10/3 /1914. In 1913 he received a Long Service Award medal and a Good Conduct medal .About 1914 his wife's address seemed to be 1 Endsleigh Place, Cawsand, Plymouth, but, it had been 4 Wellington Road Cork( this must have been pre 1909} . He never served abroad during the war. In 1918 he was awarded a pension and volunteered for an extra year. In 1919 his home address was 19 Beech Road, Southville, Bristol .When he was discharged on 7/3/1920 , having completed 25 years of service, he was a Master Gunner. He had grown to 5ft 7 ins. Military Conduct exemplary .

1904. Reginald Walter Hailes was born to Charles & Ellen 4/1/1904 in Penlee, baptised in Rame on 14/2/1904 . He went into the Navy as a school boy in 1919: M 35105: appears in The Navy List 1937, lent to RAN, serving Dev. He died 27/8/1943 , a Warrant Engineer, aboard the Egret. Commonwealth war grave, Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Panel 73, col 1 . The Egret was sunk in the Bay of Biscay off the coast of Spain by a radio controlled Henschel bomb

1920. Charles Hailes retired from the Military after 25 years of Service. His Military Conduct had been Exemplary . He retired as Master Gunner (W.O.) in 1920, then stayed on in Spike Island until 1926 .
