This page now seemingly irrelevant as William Scott, 1782, mason, is NOT one of their children!

John Scott ~1744-1823 & his wife, Margaret Scott of Chamberlain Newton

& their children

1759. John Scott, a minor, when he succeeded William & Isobel- 2nd cousins - in 1759 on Isobel's death at Whitehaugh ( though unclear how he was related) - http://www.astro.ubc.ca/people/scott/book.pdf

He is John Scott Esq, Whitehaugh on the subscription list of Caw's Poetical Museum. He was listed in 1788 ( & still on the 1811 Land Tax Rolls) as 'Owner of 'Whitehaugh, otherwise called Wester Whitehaugh; and Wester Heap otherwise called Easter Whitehaugh' valued at £648. 10s. He also sold the small piece of land known as 'Souter's Acre'. later owned by Thomas Laidlaw of Silverbuthall. He paid the Horset ax at Whitehaugh from 1785-1794. In 1797 he is recorded as the owner of 2 horses in the Horse Tax Rolls for Wilton; he also paid the Dog Tax there in the same year. He helped fund the extension to the old Wilton Kirk in 1800, also contributing to the local subscription for the war against France. He is recorded as a vassal of Buccleuch in the correspondence in the mid-18th century in the Buccleuch Archives. He was recorded as a Commissioner for Roxburghshire in 1805, and again in 1819 with his son, Walter. As well as the lands of Whitehaugh , he also owned the farms at Greensidehall & Broomhall.

1767. John Scott married Margaret Scott on 2/7/1767 in Hawick - SP. She the eldest daughter & co-heiress of Walter Scott of Chamberlain Newton- Archives & the above internet book

They had 12 children, of which just 3 sons & 3 daughters survived. William 1770; Agnes 1772 who married Adam Stovert of Hoscote; Francis 1773, a major in the Penisular Wars, killed ; James 22/2/1775 who succeeded Walter as the last Laird ; Betty 1776, the 2nd wife of Gilbert Chishome of Chisholme ; Susanne 1778; William 1782 ; Margaret 1783 are all baptised in Wilton- SP . Also John 1768; Walter ~1769 who inherited

Thus I would have 4 sons who survived infancy, Walter, James, Francis & William - this should have rang alarm bells!!

1782. A William Scott was baptised 30/1/1782 to John & Margaret Scott in Wilton - SP . I was convinced that he was Nigel's 3xggrandfather- BUT, 2/10/2019, discovered the 1861d.c. for this said ancestor, AND, his father was a James Scott, mason

1823. In the Archives( found by Nigel's brother ~1999) & above Internet book , John Scott dies 1823 - but no burial in Wilton on SP, but several in Hawick 1822-1824
