Thomas Dewhurst ~1800- <1841

Road maker on 1822 & 1827 baptism certificates.

But "reed & harrap? maker" - from Elizabeth's 1846 m.c - reeds being used in weaving

A reed, in weaving terms, is rather like a comb and is used to push the weft yarn into place once the shuttle has pulled it throught the warp threads on the loom.

1819. A Thomas Dewhurst married Jane Hacking on 20/9/1819 Blackburn - Ancestry - from here to Leek ~ 120k, so not very likely, but possible as a roadmaker!

A Roadsman in a mine was responsible for looking after the underground road, he made sure the bogey tracks didn't warp and looked out for any sign of movement in the road due to subsidence. Roadman was also a general term for any man employed on haulage or ventilation roads, including airwayman, incline keeper, platelayer, rolleyway man etc.
