William Brodie ~1780- > 1813 [ 1857]

Labourer - in 1807, Farmer- this given on the 1868 d.c. of his son . Living Old Greenock 1807

Born 1777-1788 maybe . Look up Old Greenock baptisms 1777-1788 , particularly ~1783- see d.c. below

Family lore was that he was the William Brodie, Deacon Brodie, or indeed even a Sir William Brodie, that was the role model of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde: Stephenson had bought furniture from this notorious person's respectable cabinet maker's father. Indeed Deacon Brodie, 1744-1788, was himself head of the Cabinets Makers Guild, thus Deacon Brodie, and a very respectable person by day. But at night he became a thief, and was eventually hanged for this in 1788. However there proves to be no truth in this myth - and indeed he could not be Deacon Brodie as he was only born around 1780!. Nor can I find any connection to the chief of the brodie Clan and the seat of the clan,, Brodie Castle, near Inverness? As far as I know Deacon Brodie had no children

1807. William Brodie, labourer of Old Greenock, marries Jane Russell, of Kilcalmonell, Argyll, in Greenock on 13/6/1807 - FMP & SP
