Mary Ann Murphy 1847- 1932
Upholstress

Portrait in the Balmer photo collection. Year??
1847 A plain Mary Murphy ( not Mary Ann) was born 1/6/1847 to John Murphy & Ann Loughrane in Crookhall, Iveston, Durham- not 100% convinced this definitely she-Durham Sep 1847 . There is also an entry for Gateshead, and this would cover her birth entries in censuses when given as Newcastle, and also Co Durham. Think her parents are dubious! This Crook Hall, Iveston,[not Lanchester as over written on certificate below, but still within the sub district of Lanchester ], is near Consett, NW of Lanchester & Durham-map In 1921C her birthplace is given as Whitton ?Gelbach?, Durham . This Mary was baptised on 20/6/1847 in Pontop, Durham - Ancestry . But I cannot locate Pontop!!

What was this ordered as??. no entry on bmd for a birth Durham, which is where Lanchester came 1837-1875
1851C Cannot find in County Durham, but they could have moved away . Gone to US even??
1861C Cannot find in County Durham, but she could have moved away

Family returned to Lancashire ~1872-1880 : cannot find them on shipping records Could look again!! 2022
1881C. Henry H Ormrod, 35, cabinet maker, b. Burnley, is living 2 Lloyd Street, Everton, W. Derby, Lancs with his wife, Mary A, 35, and son . Her birthplace suspect!!- think she was born Crook, Durham.

Ormond is a mistranscription on FMP - entry clearly states Ormrod! He has changed from being a cabinet maker here- but his granddaughter Irene 1916 considered him a cabinet maker in her memoirs

Henry Lewis Osmond had a theatre company, Houghton Players, in Houghton, dissolved in 1910 - which is when his bankruptcy was discharged: he is missing from this census!
1918. Was living 6 Church Road, Bipsham when "daughter in law" Ethel Osmond/Beard died . This is also where their granddaughter, Irene Osmond 1916, was living ~1918-~1925, being brought up by them. They thus raised 3 of the daughters of their son, Henry Lewis Osmond
After Ethel died , Mary had a Belgian housekeeper W. Wyers ( Irene thought her name was Wyjers and that she was German) , husband Jones/Davis? had died, but not seemingly before the 1921C! , who was also the Wardrobe mistress for Henry's company
1921C. May Osmond Ormrod, 75, no occupation, born Whitton Gelbach, Durham ( where is this??- does not seem to exist!) is living with the husband and her son´s unorthodox! family at 12 Church Road Bipsham. Slightñy odd that they are living at number 6 in 1918 and in 1922

1922. Her husband, Henry H Ormerod, 77, dies 23/4/1922 at 6 Church Road, Blackpool [Bipsham] Fylde Jun 1922 - this not on LOPC
Wendy says Irene was living with her at least until she was 9, this 1925. "When her grandmother died- but also aged 5?? , she was put into a convent boarding school and then left this and went into another boarding school in Everton, she says the latter was very harsh ". this would suggest her grandmother dies ~ 1924 . But NO. Mary Ann went to live with her married granddaughter, Marjory, 1894, in Houghton, Durham
1932. Mary A Ormrod, 90, died Houghton Dec 1932. Died on 8/12/1932 at Pendleholme, Houghton. Probate of 28 pounds to Albert Henry Balmer, builder - Do you have a photo of her grave?

A document found showing that Albert Henry Balmer was still living Pendleholme, Houghton in 1943
